Good Reasons to use Organic Fabrics

What's the fuss about organic fabrics? Why should we buy organic fabrics over their non-organic counterparts? What are the good reasons to use organic fabrics?

Linen Tea Towels vs Regular Tea Towels

When Deidaa decided to make linen tea towels, we were asked, "why linen? it's a premium fabric." Yes it is. It is also sustainable, non-toxic, and  biodegradable. Most importantly for a dishcloth, it is quick drying and absorbent. It leaves no residue. Linen tea towels keep your premium stemware and glassware streak free and sparkling clean.

An ordinary dishtowel is bulky, takes ages to dry, and does not absorb well.

You can not  see with your naked eye the toxins that are present in cotton or blended tea towels. Non-organic cotton is not sustainable. It guzzles water. It uses chemical fertilizers, and chemical pesticides. These toxins are passed on to end consumers like you and me.

PLASTIC vs STAINLESS STEEL

Plastic does not degenerate  anywhere in 200 years. Plastic in its  different avatars, pthalates, BPA, and PET harms not only to the environment, but also humans and animals. There is plastic we can see.  There is something more nefarious, plastic we cannot see - microplastics. Every time you wash a polyester garment or a plastic utensil or dispose of your plastic water bottle you are adding microplastic to the ocean and the environment.  Micro plastic ends up in water, travels up the food chain and lands on our dinner table.  As a result, we ingest microplastics.

Organic Cotton Stuffed Toys

I mentioned plastic does not go away in the next 200 years. What do we do with all that plastic? We reuse and recycle. We minimize the need for making new plastic. Deidaa's eco warrior organic cotton toys do just that. These handmade stuffed animals are made out of fabric offcuts - textile waste that would normally end up in the landfill. They are stuffed with recycled PET bottles.  The organic toys contribute to a circular economy.

What can you and I, as regular consumers and producers do, to combat the evil of plastic and the toxicity of non-organic textiles?

1. Practise the four R's

2. Refuse,  reduce, reuse and recycle

3. Avoid single-use plastic when shopping for fruits and veggies.

4. Opt for re-usable calico bags to buy and store produce.

5. Not buy produce wrapped in plastic or cling film
